Watch The American Baking Competition
- 1 Season
The American Baking Competition is a competitive food series that aired on CBS. The series is based on the hit British series The Great British Bake Off. The show focuses on a group of 10 amateur bakers as they attempt to win a prize of $250,000 and a cookbook deal. The show is filmed in Atlanta, GA, however the contestants where from all over the United States. The bakers compete outside in a white tent located in a field. There are two judges, celebrity chefs Paul Hollywood and Marcela Valladolid, as well as host Jeff Foxworthy. Each week there is a themed challenge such as cookies, cakes, pies, and breads. There are three rounds: the signature bake, the technical bake, and the showstopper. The signature bake is where the bakers have to produce a bake based on a home recipe. This is a recipe they should have no problem baking, since it's one they have used for years. The technical bake is much trickier; everyone receives the same recipe, usually one of the judges' recipes, but all the instructions are not on the printed recipe. The bakers have to figure out how to execute the bake as close to perfect as possible. The technical bake is judged blindly; the judges rank them from worst to best and discover the identity of the baker as they announce the rankings. The final round, the showstopper, is the main challenge. The bakers have to create a display of the themed goods that must look and taste good. Unlike the previous rounds, this sometimes takes more than one day to complete. After judging and critiquing the showstopper, the judges deliberate and some is declared a star baker and someone else is eliminated. The star baker doesn't receive immunity from elimination, it is just a recognition that the judges consider this person to have had the best tasting and looking dishes of that theme.
