Lucy Carmichael is feeling down, as her son Jerry is away at college and her friend Vivian has gone on vacation. She's feeling aimless and decides to throw herself into some redecorating to get her mind off things. Her friend Mary Jane pops by and helps her move her furniture around, but Lucy's decorating plans quickly spiral out of control. She decides to tear down a wall and expand the living room, which leads to a series of mishaps and hilarity.

First, Lucy accidentally orders an absurdly large chandelier that can't fit into her house. Then, she hires a pair of unskilled handymen to help with the wall removal, who end up knocking down part of the ceiling by mistake. She tries to clean up the mess with a vacuum and ends up breaking the machine. Each new mishap drives Lucy deeper into her decorating frenzy, even though it's causing more harm than good.

Meanwhile, Lucy's bank account is rapidly dwindling as she keeps buying new decorations and paying for contractors to fix her mistakes. Her neighbor Harry comes over and tries to convince her to snap out of it, but Lucy is convinced that the expanded living room will make her happy. In a fit of determination, she even tries to knock down the remaining part of the wall herself, but ends up injuring her hand and having to go to the hospital.

As she sits in the hospital, Lucy realizes that her obsession with redecorating was just a distraction from her feelings of loneliness and emptiness. She admits to Harry that she's been feeling lost without Jerry and Vivian around, and Harry encourages her to reach out to her other friends and find other things to occupy her time. When she returns home, Lucy has a change of heart and decides to put the living room back to its original layout. With the help of Harry and Mary Jane, she puts the room back together and feels a sense of contentment and peace.

In the end, Lucy learns that sometimes the best way to deal with difficult emotions is to confront them head-on, rather than trying to escape through other means. Though her redecorating frenzy caused chaos and hilarity along the way, it ultimately led her to a better understanding of herself and her priorities.
