In season 1 episode 24, titled "Valley Forge," James, Sarah, and Henri find themselves at the Continental Army winter camp at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. The soldiers are suffering from harsh winter conditions, scarce food and clothing, and the constant threat of attack from the British army. General George Washington faces the daunting task of keeping morale up and maintaining discipline among his men, all while strategizing how to win the war for independence.

Meanwhile, James meets a young soldier named Ned, who is struggling with his own feelings of doubt and homesickness. Through their conversations, James learns about the sacrifices and struggles faced by ordinary soldiers in the war effort. He also witnesses firsthand the harsh realities of war, including the death of a fellow soldier.

As the winter wears on, the soldiers become increasingly weary and discontent. Desertion rates rise, and James and Sarah witness a tense encounter between a group of soldiers and their commanding officer. Meanwhile, Henri befriends a French soldier named Lafayette and helps him plan a surprise birthday party for General Washington.

Towards the end of the episode, James and Sarah receive news that their printer back in Philadelphia has been seized by the British. They decide to leave Valley Forge to try and retrieve it, but not before James has a chance encounter with Nehemiah, a former slave turned soldier. Nehemiah tells James about his journey to freedom and how he has become a soldier to fight for the cause of liberty.

Overall, "Valley Forge" offers a powerful portrayal of the difficulties faced by the Continental Army during the winter of 1777-1778.
