When Mary Ellen returns to work following Curt’s death, John and the others begin taking care of John Curtis while she is gone. Mary Ellen soon becomes extremely overprotective of him when the son of an old friend dies after accidentally dies when she was out of the room. After that, Mary Ellen abruptly decides to stop working again to watch John Curtis round the clock. Meanwhile, Ben is taking some candid photos of life around the mountain and soon takes a picture of Erin with skimpy shorts on. After having the roll developed, Ike suggests he send the photos in to the Charlottesville newspaper. Forgetting about the picture of Erin, the pictures are sent into the contest and that one wins, leaving John and Olivia furious at what they see it. When some officers at the nearby army base invite Erin to a dance, John is hesitant to let her go, but eventually consents. It is after Erin leaves for the dance that Mary Ellen and John discover John Curtis is missing, and soon find him on a rope bridge.
